Automated Policy-Based Off-Load

Leonovus Smart Filer migrates data from your file servers to secondary or cloud storage, freeing capacity while ensuring that data remains accessible throughout the migration process. Data migration is performed seamlessly and automatically based on policy you define.

Smart Filer first scans your file shares and generates reports on the data. Last-access reports present a view of the number of files and total storage dedicated to them, according to how frequently they are accessed. File type reports indicate the number of files and total storage dedicated to each type of file (for example, documents, media, and so on).

Using report information, you can configure policy to off-load files matching the criteria you define to designated targets, including on-premises secondary storage and cloud storage services.

Based on your established policy, Smart Filer automatically and seamlessly migrates eligible data from the original file server to the designated target storage. During the process, data always remains available while capacity is freed on the primary server.

You can also schedule scans and off-load processes to ensure they do not affect the performance of normal operations.

Smart Filer makes your at-capacity file servers “bottomless” by leveraging much cheaper secondary and cloud storage without affecting user experience.


Metadata Discovery

Smart Filer lets you perform preliminary classification of the data on your file servers.

Data classification is based on the metadata associated with each file. The resulting inventory forms a model on which you can perform analyses to determine the potential impacts of various selection criteria and policies. This discovery exercise is non-invasive and preserves the metadata profiles of each of the data files in question.

Off-Load Scheduling

Smart Filer off-loads files automatically and transparently. However, it interacts with shared critical resources such as your network and your primary file server. Therefore, you can schedule these Smart Filer activities, avoiding contention for scarce resources.

Rich File Off-Load Policy

Smart Filer builds a data classification inventory model of the data stored in your primary storage. Using this model, you can run analytics to build a policy that best meets your needs in addressing and improving the capacity of your storage.

The preliminary data classification inventory model is based on the results of initial non-invasive scans of the primary file servers.

When data classification is complete, you can create file off-load plans. Each plan contains three key elements: a source file share, policies that specify the criteria for off-loading files, and a storage target to which the files will be off-loaded.

Policies for identifying files that can be off-loaded are defined by file metadata criteria, such as file type and time since its last access. For example, you can create a policy to off-load all documents that have not been accessed in more than 60 days.

Storage targets include cloud storage such as Amazon S3, S3-compatible services and Azure Blob storage, as well as secondary file storage infrastructure.
